Human resources policies comprise the standards and regulations adhered to by an organization to govern and manage workplace and labor relations. Hr policies are mostly established by a company mandate to reflect its beliefs and culture. Statutory and regulatory requirements also shape an organizations hr policies and procedures. The establishment of these standards forms an important set of guidelines for management and employees to follow. By understanding duties, responsibilities and expectations, both management and employees alike can function with a common understanding. For the purposes of classification, these policies will be referred to as internal and external policies.

Internal human resources policies comprise a broad array of standards and procedures that have been established by management and apply to all individuals. For the most part, the majority of pertinent policies are introduced to the individual when they first commence working for an organization. They can also consist of award conditions or wages that are pre-established by regulatory bodies but applicable to the class and responsibility of the individual worker. In other cases, company divisions establish separate guidelines to assist with the smooth operation of their collective responsibility.

When an individual first commences work with an organizational, the accompanying paper work usually stipulates conditions of employment. These hr policies deal with absenteeism, leave requests, annual leave, long term leave, dress code, work expectations, job requirements and functional scope. They can also include a standard set of internal work procedures and policies that may pertain to the individual or the division within which the worker is employed.

The benefits management of hr policies are of natural interest to most employees. This includes ancillary benefits that are associated with the individual's employment. Health and safety stipulations, insurance requirements, expected hours of work, award agreements, penalty rates and leave loadings. Promotional conditions or bonus incentive schemes are also part of this. Companies that fill internal vacancies can be required to fulfill minimum advertising standards stipulated by pre-established company mandates or external statutory requirements. Superannuation and 401K savings plan are bound be separate internal company procedures and external regulatory requirements that shape company and individual decisions. Family friendly conditions such as maternity leave and leave for family emergency are also important aspects of a companies hr policies and procedres.

Hr Policies provide a common framework for a company to operate under. Whether they are internal or external, a common set of standards assist individuals to understand their key role, expectations, duties and responsibilities. Without a common understanding the management of labor resources would be inherently more difficult.
